The Centennial
State Chapter was founded on September 17, 1904, at
Greeley, Colorado. It was chartered by the National Society Daughters of the
American Revolution, which was founded on October 11, 1890. The Organizing Regent was Mrs. Sarah Carr Hogarty (Mrs. M.J.).
The name for this Chapter was selected because Colorado was the centennial
state having been admitted to the union in the centennial year of American Independence, 1876, as the 38th state.
The Enterpean Club of Mount Vernon presented Centennial State Chapter with their
gavel on June 14, 1905, as that club was disbanding. The connection between the two clubs
was formed because the only veteran of the War of 1812 from Colorado was buried at Mount
Vernon. The United States Daughters of 1812 placed a marker on his grave.
Article II of our by-laws states: "The objects of this society shall be to keep alive
the spirit of patriotism; to perpetuate the memory of the men and women who achieved
American Independence; to encourage historical research; to collect and preserve relics,
records and documents relating to patriots; to the founders of the State of Colorado
and to the early history of the Greeley Colony; to mark places of historical interest
and to promote the celebration of patriotic anniversaries."
From inception, this chapter has been involved in projects that: advance education and
patriotism, preserve historical sites and history, and uphold the Constitution of the
United State of America. Some of these projects are marking and maintaining historical
markers and monuments, donating to special schools that keep children from falling through
the cracks, sponsoring scholarships and contests with rewards for excellence. This chapter
awards a medal for excellence to an outstanding ROTC cadet at the University of Northern
Colorado each year. Participating in various patriotic events is another chapter activity.
This chapter has a history of serving the community wherever needed. During wartime, chapter
members worked with the Red Cross making pillows for the hospitals, collecting linens, and
donating money to help purchase a blood plasma truck. This is but one example of DAR
dedication to the welfare of our country. When duty calls, DAR answers the call.
United We Stand.
What
Centennial State Chapter Has Been Up To...
In 2003, Past Regent & State Organizing
Secretary, Jan Livingston planned four History Nights which she hosted in
her home. Members and Guests were invited to attend these evening
events where Jan prepared information on the French and Indian War, The
Seven Years War, The Treaty of Paris, The Louisiana Purchase, The Spanish
American War and the War of 1812. Jan's History Nights for 2004
revolved around the "Revolutionary War and it's battles". We
anticipate what will be on the menu each summer.
